Building JobMedium in the open

Before we open the network, we've been studying specialized recruiting firms and talking with the founders who run them. Here's what we're seeing, and what it's changing.

Most products arrive fully formed, with the messy part hidden. We'd rather show the work, and right now the work is mostly listening.

Over the past few weeks we've been studying specialized recruiting firms across AI, data, engineering and cybersecurity, and talking with the founders who run them wherever they'll give us the time. Some of what we've seen confirmed what we expected. More of it didn't.

The best firms are smaller than you'd think

Many of the firms with the strongest reputations in technical hiring are a handful of people. Their size isn't a stage they're trying to grow out of. It's how they stay close to their market.

Founders are still recruiting

At most of these firms the founder is still on the desk, often on the hardest searches. That shapes everything: how quickly they decide, what they'll trust and how little time they have for anything that doesn't earn it.

Specialization matters more than scale

Clients hire these firms for what they know about one market, not for how many recruiters they employ. A small desk that knows every good security engineer in a region beats a large one that has to start from a search string.

Capacity and demand rarely peak together

The pattern we hear most is uneven work. There's a month with more client searches than the desk can cover, and then a month with time to spare and nothing that fits. Firms handle it through people they trust, one handshake at a time.

What it's changing

It's why we're building the partner side of JobMedium with our first 25 Founding Partners instead of shipping it to them finished. If you run a specialized firm and any of this sounds wrong, or right, we'd like to hear it. Join the waitlist and reply to the welcome email, because we read every one.
