What drives the number
- Scope of ownership. Maintaining pipelines, owning the platform, and designing the architecture are three different bands.
- Depth over breadth. Deep expertise in one major cloud typically pays better than shallow familiarity with three.
- On-call expectations. Production accountability, and the compensation attached to it, should be explicit in the offer.
- Security and compliance exposure. Regulated environments carry a premium.
On certifications
Certifications help candidates get shortlisted and matter in partner-status contexts, but rarely move a band on their own. Demonstrated production experience does.

Match on scope and on-call load, not job title, and compare total compensation including any on-call allowance.
